Title: Stargazer
The stars of the cosmos from the tiny island of Skye. This image was made on a beautiful clear night on the west coast of the island near the hamlet of Struan. As you look past the lighthouse and out to sea you have the sense of being on the edge of the world, where silver water ebbs under the stars.
This was a technically challenging shot as the sky appeared to me to be completely black which made it difficult to see what I was doing and to work with the camera. I was about to go home but decided on one last shot at the mouth of the river. It was minus 5 degrees and my fingers were numb as I waited 25seconds for the shot to expose. To my surprise and delight, when the shutter finally clicked, this beautiful violet and teal sky appeared on the back of my camera. It is amazing how much colour is actually in the sky long after the sun has set. This is a true to life image with very little post processing.
Printed on Canson Infinity Baryta Photographique 310gsm paper which has fabulous colour reproduction and a slight lustre. The image has a 2 inch border in white with the signature, title and number of the print.
About My Work
I believe in giving my clients beautiful artwork on luxury papers that hold their colours for a lifetime! For these special prints of my work I use dreamy, light textured Canson Canvas and the highest quality inks. I do all my own printing, having spent years learning this skill I prefer to maintain control of the colour representation at all stages to ensure you get a truly handmade image.
About My Materials
People often say that my images look like paintings because of the richness of the colours, the depth of the black and the texture of the materials I use. Canson are one of the oldest paper manufacturers in the world, they have been making paper for over 450 years in France. Founded in 1557 and printers to Louis XVI, their paper was used by Voltaire and Napoleon and the Montgolfier brothers used Canson paper to make the first hot air balloon. Canson paper was used by Picasso, Ingres, Chagal, Miro and many other artists. They have been making paper and canvas for photography since this art began over 150 years ago. Canson are Eco Friendly - they purchase paper pulp only from forests managed in a sustainable way which also makes them pretty special.
