Castle Stalker, from the Gaelic word Stalcaire meaning Hunter or Falconer, sits on a small island in Loch Laish on the coast of Argyll in Scotland. Taken on a day of dramatic light this long exposure captures the drama and sense of history of this ancient place.
The original castle was a small fort, built around 1320 by Clan MacDougall who were then Lords of Lorn. The MacDougalls lost their title after their defeat by King Bruce at Brander Pass in 1308 but regained it for a period after 1328. In about 1388 the Lordship of Lorn passed to the Stewarts, the lands including Castle Stalker.
Printed at 48 x 32 inches with a 2 inches white border with the signature, title and edition number under the image for a total size of 52 x 36 inches.
Printed on beautiful thick fine art paper with a watercolour texture to bring out the texture of the mountains against the moody skies backdrop.
About My Materials
People often say that my images look like paintings because of the richness of the colours, the depth of the black and the texture of the materials I use. Arches-Canson are one of the oldest paper manufacturers in the world, they have been making paper for over 450 years in France. Founded in 1557 and printers to Louis XVI, their paper was used by Voltaire and Napoleon and the Montgolfier brothers used Canson paper to make the first hot air balloon.
This paper was used by Picasso, Ingres, Chagal, Miro and many other artists. They have been making paper and canvas for photography since this art began over 150 years ago. People often say that my images look like paintings because of the richness of the colours, the depth of the black and the texture of the materials I use.
