St Pantaléon and les Beaumettes are actually little villages in the Vaucluse. The name conjures up for me a tea-dance band. Nearby in Bouche du Rhone is an equally small village, Roque d'Anthéron, which stages an annual world renowned piano festival. The audience sits on high in the garden looking down on the performers, listening to beautifully played music to the accompaniament of cigales, sometimes looking at the stage, but often distracted by the thought of a picnic...The painting could be equally titled "A Bird in the Band is worth Two in the Bush", but I wanted to give St Pantaléon and his little group their moment in the lime-light.
Oil on Stretched Canvas - 50cm x70cm.
