When me and Mr Spencer started courting, we went away for a weekend, it was a fairly unplanned journey and we ended up in Glastonbury. We were both serving in the Royal Air Force at the time, which obviously had some influence on our worldly awareness!! We saw a man walking along the High Street wearing a set of antlers and they were huge. What was more confusing to me was that we were the only two people who seemed to think this was unusual!!
As part of the trip, we walked up Glastonbury Tor to St Michael’s Tower, the views from there showed the west country at its best. When I started to plan the Icons collection I remembered our weekend, thinking about it made me smile. I was trying to work out a way to do justice to the free spirit that runs through Glastonbury, and that is why I did the sky in the way I did. The architecture of the tower is as it should be, but the sky is full of fun.
A reduction Lino print is made by using the same piece of Lino to print all the colours. Each time a layer is printed then more of the surface of the Lino is removed, reducing the surface area. Each me you put a layer of ink on the Lino and print it, the Lino must come into contact with the paper at the same place, otherwise the picture does not align and will not be usable. Reduction lino printing requires careful planning and precision, as mistakes cannot be easily corrected once a layer of ink has been applied. It is a time-consuming process, but the end result can be a beautiful, vibrant and layered print. I start off intending to make 10 images and usually end up with 7 or 8, but it can be less.
