I was drawn to painting this Spider plant in cellophane as the inherent geometry of the plant is disturbed by the veiled patterns of the transparent wrap. These bisecting and obscuring elements fragment the linear nature of the plant, bringing the viewer into the world of the abstract.
I am interested in the balance between figuration and abstraction in the world around us. Recently, I have been painting still life and daily scenes using a restricted palette and intimate scale, which persuades the viewer to look beyond the motif and become immersed in the form. The viewer's initial recognition of the subject matter bleeds away as the abstractions within the image act as a catalyst to broaden the viewer's insights, like Wittgenstein’s ladder.
