Multimedia painting on board, which home job frame attached to piece.
A pivotal piece in my practice as all my ideas amalgamated in this piece. I worked on ‘Soz, I forgot.’ for over 7 months, constantly returning and adding to it. I added the very rustic looking frame to the board, the roughness of it is to be embraced. However, I built the board on foundation to test out surfaces so like to think of it as quite temporal, it was very loved and cared for.
My practice is concerned with the impermanence of memory, and how this is documented whether this be analog or digital. I have become obsessed with this exploration since my dad was diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimer's when I was 19. My Dad's bizarre behaviour suddenly made sense and I felt a sense of relief, that he hadn't just become a bit of an ass!
I am still trying to deal with this unusual circumstance, therefore making my practice a form of therapy. Incorporating the philosophy of the Surrealists', I aim to immortalise the bizarre, scattered memories him and I share.
A follow up from a digital drawing exploring the memory of being on holiday in Crete, with my family. Where for the first time I was sure there was something seriously wrong with my dad. We were having breakfast before going to see some ruins or pillars in Heraklion-sadly I forgot this part. I was having a berry sort of based danish and could smell orange juice, my mum was eating honeycomb. But through the mutation of this memory, I decided to coin the Fanta logo for some reason. Throughout this meal, my dad couldn’t remember very basic information about me, like my birthday or where I was going to university in the next few months. As an 18-year-old, I believed there was no other reason for this forgetfulness other than impassiveness. I feel sorry for us all back then.
