Artwork description:

SOUVENIR is part of the artist's series SOUL OF THE CITY.

In this project, Sophie Roy explores the notions of movement, roots and permanence.

Cities evoke the flow and perpetual movement: traffic, construction, birth, death, immigration. At the same time, a city provides its inhabitants various forms of anchorages such as history, heritage, neighborhoods, cafes, parks and institutions.

Her creative process echoes the themes that she explores in this project. This involves combining and uniting different world fragments using her photomontage technique. With this technique, she can manipulate, superimpose and juxtapose various photographic elements of different nature and eras.

Unlike a photographic snapshot that captures and freezes a precise moment in time, photomontage allows Sophie Roy to express a vision of life that is dynamic and made of changes, movements and transformations.

Unlike the typical “postcard”, the representation of the city in this series takes us beyond the fragmented and frozen vision that we sometimes have of the world around us.

This project is part of her reflection on today’s society.
