Songkran is a traditional Southeast Asian New Year Day practiced in several Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Burma, as well as the Yunnan Province of South China. Songkran is symbolized by water splashing activities to wash off all misfortunes in the past year, and to welcome the new year with a fresh, auspicious start.

Songkran celebration is rich with many happy traditions. It is Thailand’s most famous festival that lasts from April 9 to April 16. Tourists from all over of the world come to Thailand to get wet and have fun.

This painting shows happy, smiling people dressed in the traditional costumes of the Mon people, having fun splashing water on one another. The Mon people were the very first people who lived in Southeast Asia since ancient times. The background consists of a Buddhist temple and a mountainous area of Northern Thailand.
