Original artwork description:

The monochromatic canvas's rich texture employs, muslin and Payne’s Grey acrylic paint, to create the figure. Expressionistic yet controlled the fabric is thrown repeatedly and teased until the ethos of the piece is revealed.
Movement remains a key factor within this work, exploring how gesture can appear to manifest within the still image, nevertheless, the figurative form can appear constrained in a moment in time.
Elements of soulful musicality and dance are also present, exploring the philosophy of the performer and reflecting upon human vulnerability.
The unique relief of muslin creates forms, revealing emotional expressions within the contorts of the paint-soaked fabric.
Derek’s intention is to reveal delicate and sensual figures and explore the philosophy of the performer, whilst reflecting upon his continued interest in the human condition.
