Original artwork description:

“Solea” is an acrylic painting on canvas 90cms width x 102cms height. It is part of a series of paintings called ‘The Jazz Series’. This series of paintings has been inspired by listening to the music of Miles Davis and this particular work has been inspired by one of Miles’ most enduring and innovative achievements, Sketches of Spain. The painting ‘Solea’ intends to capture the essence of southern Spain and in particular the tradition of flamenco music and song. When a ‘solea’ is sung, vocalists have to combine ‘spur of the moment’ improvisation with the character and tradition of the music. The painting attempts to meet that same balance between the tradition of Spanish culture and in particular flamenco, and the expressive freedom of improvisation. A balance between passion and restraint.
The painting is built in layers of acrylic paint combining thin washes of colour and heavy layers of impasto sometime mixed with encaustic and fine granulated sea shells. The surface of the painting is burnished and abraded as the layers are built. As well as being stimulated by the music I take inspiration from colourists such as Barbara Rae, John Hoyland and Hans Hoffman alongside African art and Art Brut. Prints on photo quality paper are available. See details.
