Original artwork description:

This work was the culmination of my learning experience during art school. I took a drawing class when I left the Army, having never drawn or painted anything in my life, and quickly decided it was something I needed to pursue. Before this I had never really done any work involving self portraiture in an emotional way, nor was I technically prepared to do so until this point. I thought for my final semester at CSULB I would try and describe the emotions and tough decisions that were made when I joined and left the Army, and try and capture what it felt like to rejoin the civilian world. I chose oil paint because I love the feel and texture and also the archival and classic quality of it. There is something so organic about it that helps capture the human form so well.
