A moody and mysterious aquatint etching.
This atmospheric etching captures a view across water, towards gently rising hills receding into the distance. It catches the moment when the light of morning is just peeping over the land on the right hand side.
The cool blues, greens and greys of this moody start to the day are warmed by the lighter colour across the water and touch of pink in the right hand corner, hinting at the day to come.
To create this etching I have used a zinc plate, aquatint (melting resin onto the plate with a flame, creating raised 'mounds' that allow the acid to sink into the plate. This in turn, creates a surface for the ink to 'grip'), litho crayon, ammonia, chalk, acid and burnishing. The professional etching ink is smeared onto the plate and gently removed, with some ink deliberately left to create the atmospheric sky. This image is created by placing the inked plate on the bed of an etching press, with a sheet of damp 'Somerset' heavy weight, white paper on top. The press is then hand 'wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image onto the paper.
This artwork is part of a 'variable edition' of only 25 prints from this etching plate.
A variable edition is when there is a variation in inking/colours for each print, therefore each artwork created is totally unique.
This piece is the first of the series and numbered 1/25 (please see photographs). It is signed, titled and numbered on the front.
