I painted this work to remember how I saw the skyline of the Dutch city Heerlen when I was 7. On regular basis my family and I visited this city for shopping and my father's work. These were the last days of the Dutch coal mines. Lange Jan and Lange Lies (Long John and Long Lisa) were the tallest smoke stacks (135 and 155 m) of the privately held Oranje Nassau coal mine. Those stacks were part of the power station house to fuel the coal mine lifts and factories.
The painting is made with permission based on a picture made by Fred Fouarge, I added the coalmine to it including the mine stone piles.
