Original artwork description:

“Skelwith Water” is part of a series of paintings called ‘Cumbria 2020’. The painting is 57cms H x 77cms W made on 300gms Arches Aquarelle Rough paper using watercolour, inks and acrylic paint. This series of paintings has been developed from a recent visit to Cumbria. All the locations are familiar to me and I frequently revisit the area. ‘Skelwith Water’ is based on a memory of a walk along Elterwater also known as ‘Lake of the Swan’ or Lake Of Alder’ towards the waterfall, Skelwith Force’. As you walk along the lakeside you pass through a valley of waters that are initially still, then moving and turning and eventually crashing through a wooded glen. My paintings are never literal and are best understood as gestural memories of being in a special place. In honesty you don’t need to know about the location, that is just the source of inspiration. Working on paper ensures that you have to make every painterly mark and stroke count. It is very immediate. No room for too many layers. Creative incidents are always prevalent in gestural painting and you have to let the fluidity of the paint dictate edge and shape. I am encouraged and inspired by modernists such as Barbara Rae and Howard Hodgkin and frequently reference the Impressionists and the Fauvists.
The paper I’m using is of a substantial handmade quality and I have purposefully retained the deckled edges. The painting is float mounted on ivory coloured card and set in a perspex glazed custom made solid oak frame 92cmsW x 73cmsH . The painting is shipped in custom reinforced cardboard crate. Also available in A3 print format. The painting is shipped in a robust custom made cardboard crate (same as those used to transport large screens). The painting is bubble wrapped to protect the canvas. Further wrapping is made with corrugated card. A wooden frame is placed inside the cardboard crate to preserve the structural strength of the packaging. Each painting is insured to its sale value. Shipping costs within the U.K. take into consideration weight and insurance. U.K. shipping costs for this artwork are £75
