Shopping Trip 2008
The painting captures a moment when shopping becomes a bit hectic, you start dropping things as the car is being filled, and your family members are preoccupied with taking a stone out of their shoe or generally distracted from the task at hand.
I wanted to capture a seemingly mundane moment in our lives, like going shopping, when we are task orientated. Despite the hectic nature of urban life, where we find ourselves involved in rhythms and routines, if we stop for a moment, and take time to observe what we are doing there is something magical and profound to be found in every moment of life.
In the image I showcase the typical austere modernist architecture of carparks, supermarkets etc. These environments are soulless, even as we live in this built environment and it exerts its presence on us; we are unaware of how our behaviour becomes internalised, as we live in our thoughts rather than connected to the space around us.
