A shell with spiral curls reminds of the rising and setting of the sun, alternating phases of the moon, and cycles of creation and destruction. In some traditions, such a shell was used as a ritual musical instrument. In Hinduism, its sound was associated with the rhythmic pulsation of the cosmos, the breath of Vishnu, and the divine word “OM”. With a twisted shell in his hand, Vishnu himself was depicted, his sister Kottravei and the dual deity Hariharu, born of the passionate embrace of Vishnu and Shiva. In Buddhism, a twisted shell is one of the eight symbols of a good omen, glorifying the Buddha’s teaching and opening the mystical path from samsara to nirvana.
