‘SHANGO’ is an acrylic painting 28cms x 20cms on canvas paper. It is presented in a white card mount 35cms x 28cms It is part of a series of three studies which take their inspiration from modern and contemporary music. In this case, this series relates to African and Latin cultures. ‘Shango’ is an African storm god. In African mythology ‘Shango’ was the king of the Yoruba. His colours are red and white and his energies are fierce and percussive. ‘Shango’ is also a dance related to the Shango cult. The painting tries to capture the energy and spirit of frenetic dance and expression of movement. In this respect every brushstroke, every smear, every drag, every splash is instinctive, gestural and explosive. It is joyful and expressive in its composition.
