Serenade
Oil on canvas: 20 x 24 inch: 51 x 61 cm with edges painted as part of the scene. Strung and ready to hang.
Finished in soft sheen artists varnish to avoid the glare of indoor lighting.
Serenade took a commended rosette for oil painting category at L.E.A.M.A.C. 2013 open competition in Long Eaton Town Hall. Serenade took Highly Commended at the 2013 Art Awards, London.
The little linnet in full song captivates the listener as reward for freedom from a gilded cage. Perched on a bowl with a band of gold the songster is surrounded with gilding, from the cup to the gold trinkets that adorn the young lady. The floral embellishments worn in her hair and dress merge with the surrounds to complete a scene of harmony and unity.
A linnet in a gilded cage,
A linnet on a bough,
In frosty winter one might doubt
Which bird is luckier now.
But let the trees burst out in leaf,
And nests be on the bough,
Which linnet is the luckier bird,
Oh who could doubt it now?
Christina Georgina Rossetti was the subject of her brother Dante Rossettis first completed oil painting.
