I always think of sunflowers as being a summer flower - and where I grew up in Texas, they were. Or at least, that is how I remember them. My older sister and I spent large parts of our summers living with my paternal grandparents, and we spent a good portion of our time "chopping cotton" which meant going up and down the rows howing the larger weeds, such as sunflowers so that they would not get caught up in the combine machine. It was hot and sweaty work. We had to watch out for snakes, who liked the shade of the cotton plants.
It is kind of amazing that I can now admire sunflowers for their beauty and sunny colors. The are a joy to paint!
