“Selim” is an acrylic painting on a black gesso ground over cotton duck 76cmsW x 102cmsH. The painting is built in layers of thin washes of dichlorotriazine dyes and heavy impasto. The painting is part of the ‘Jazz’ suite of works which relate in particular to the compositions of Miles Davis and in this instance Miles’ uncompromising free form jazz album ‘Live-Evil’. ‘Selim’ is a musical score from the album. This series is named because it suggests a connection between painting and musical improvisation. The use of vivid, softened colour celebrates the experimental and improvisational nature of its composition and pays homage to Henri Matisse’ cut out works of the same name. The name Selim is of Arabic origin meaning safety and security and expressing peace, truth and sincerity. Miles and Selim are anagrams of each other containing the same letters. If painting matters, it is because it is the will and the whole self in harmony, without self-deception. ‘Selim’ is a contemplative painting, on the surface purposefully simple with an invitation to muse in a passage of reflection or thought. I continue to look to the great modern colourists for inspiration such as Hans Hoffman, Barbara Rae, Gillian Ayres, Howard Hodgkin and Mark Rothko. A3 prints on photo quality paper of the painting are available, please see main page. The limited edition of 50 prints include a cream window mount 41x51cms . The prints are signed and numbered and have a certificate of authenticity. Prints are posted in flat card envelope. The painting is shipped in a robust custom made cardboard crate (same as those used to transport large screens). The painting is bubble wrapped to protect the canvas. Further wrapping is made with corrugated card. A wooden frame is placed inside the cardboard crate to preserve the structural strength of the packaging. Each painting is insured to its sale value. Shipping costs within the U.K. take into consideration weight and insurance. U.K. shipping costs for this artwork are £80
