Original artwork description:

I justify my hat collection with my numerous self portraits. Here is one of them. I like this cowboy hat, though I don't wear it publicly. Its velvety texture and contrasting silver buckles please me.

Printmaking implies that there is are carriers in the process of creation - other than pencil and brush - which come between the hands and finished work. Examples are an etching plate and press, or a screen and squeegee. Here I am using a bleached photo I took with a remote as the carrier, before putting in detail and color with pencil. Hence a print, and a mono print. I never do two alike.

It is a very flexible way to work, in that I can make the same composition in different sizes and color combinations. For example, I could print this as a miniature and maintain most of the detail in a finished piece. Or printing it large would make for quite a different effect.

Art is a endlessly interesting journey of exploration, and in this case of self exploration.

Materials used:

Colored pencil, graphite, bristol board, photography
