Sebastian Vettel
Toro Rosso STR3 2008
594mm x 420mm
My painting portraying the nose of the Toro Rosso car in which Sebastien Vettel completed his first full season in Formula 1. The German driver regularly fought for points during the year, but his stand out weekend came at the Italian Grand Prix.
There was torrential rain all weekend at Monza but the small Italian team developed a setup that coped well in the terrible conditions. This resulted in Vettel securing his maiden pole position and a third position for teammate Bourdais.
In the race, Vettel dominated from lights to flag, while the title contenders squabbled in the pack. This performance promoted Vettel up to the senior Red Bull team for the 2009 season.
The STR3 was a beautifully sculpted car with a fantastic livery featuring very few sponsors. The contours of the nose cone, once extra aerodynamic winglets were added for the final few races, created a fantastic looking front end. To draw attention to this, I have painted the rest of the car to look out-of-focus, to draw the viewer's eye to the golden nose with the winglets protruding out above. The painting is a tribute to Sebastien Vettel's iconic career.
