The wall I built
A shield of heart
For protection it stands
From love's chaotic start

In that youthful love season
A search I did begin
For love that was true
But also a caution to protect my soul within

I longed for love to come
And for that love to stay
But my heart did ache
At the thought of a future, wrenched away

So I built a wall
In my inner world
To protect me from pain
That too easily unfurls

But the wall I built
Kept love from entering in
Though I needed it so
My wall kept me from healing

Now, wisdom has shown
That the walls I created
I must bring down
If I wish love to be sated

So, I must open my heart
And let love take its chance
For if I don't let it in
I will never know true romance
