Original artwork description:

In this portrait study of a young man I wanted to express intense longing and emotion. The tight cropping and close focus on the face gives this painting an impact well beyond it's size. Faces are riveting to me for their ability to demonstrate feelings that are difficult to describe. I titled this one "Saudade", a beautiful Portuguese word which according to Wikipedia is "a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves."
