This painting tells the story of idleness and waiting for the day when everyone prepares for Sunday. I have included a verse of the poem ‘Saturday at the Village’ by Giacomo Leopardi, one of the greatest Italian poets of the 19th century and an exponent of Romanticism. The work consists of a metaphor about life. Saturday is compared to childhood, the age when one is full of hope and joyful plans for the future. Such hopes, however, often clash with the reality of Sunday (adulthood) which brings disappointments or short-lived joys.
Waiting is thus a great pleasure for man, a pleasure to be enjoyed according to the poet, as the future and adulthood often lead to the unravelling of hopes. the only possible happiness, in fact, is the expectation of a well-being to come.
