“I am making this statement as an act of wilful defiance of military authority, because I believe that the War is being deliberately prolonged by those who have the power to end it.” ― Siegfried Sassoon.
In August 2014 the world will mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. Many of the great insights to the horrors of the trenches have come from satirical and bitter poems written by the men who fought valiantly in them. Siegfried Sassoon was one such enigma, awarded a Military Cross for his heroic efforts while at the same time condemning the conduct of the war.
Here I have chosen Sassoon's poem 'Does it matter?' as the backdrop for this acrylic portrait of the soldier poet.
