2022, "Sandhornøya" - stone sculpture

This original quartzite sculpture is one of the latest artworks of the talented Bulgarian contemporary professional sculptor Ognyan Chitakov, deeply inspired by organic abstract expressionism, postmodernism and geometry. Quartzite is the hardest one of all rocks, and just like marble it is a metamorphic rock, which was originally pure quartz sandstone. The artist's concept is to create with this most hard stone material various abstract landscapes of common places on Earth, rich in this beautiful and extremely hard stone material. Sandhornøya (Sandhornøy) is a mountainous island in the municipality of Gildeskål in Nordland county in Norway. In Sandhornøy, being the birthplace of the famous Norwegian professor and hymn writer, Elias Blix, together with Mårnes and Austertana it is one of the largest quarries for quartzite in the world with an output of 1,000,000 metric tonnes annually. The unique sculptural spacial form is carved in this amazing quartzite rock with the help of an extraordinary maze of carvings and details, leaving the feeling of airiness and lightness in this very ancient rock piece.
