Crocus sativus is a perennial with autumn-blooming corms.
Larger than most other crocus species, each Crocus sativus flower also contains three precious stigmas (the part of the pistil that receives pollen), three incandescent red filaments that have been cultivated and harvested for their flavor since the beginning of time. Today, a rare spice considered one of the most delicate, saffron is also one of the most expensive in the world.
I stayed with my friends near Toulon during the crocus bloom, and every day I admired their beautiful harvest.
Observing these magnificent flowers, I suddenly had a desire to paint this picture.
