In this painting a collection of vigorously applied slapdash oil marks settle visually into the form of a figure in profile, head leading leftward fronting a body extended out horizontally at the bottom of the picture plane as if reclining, but more likely crawling or leaping in a movement of searching or agitated escape. The head, leaning downward in an attitude akin to resignation, carries a gnarled facial expression of searching or seeking; arms in the guise of blue-grey streaks of paint support the weight of its urgent burden. A second horizontal figure, this one more ethereal and positioned reciprocally, hovers above in an attitude of protective concern and observation like a diminutive rosy headed guardian angel looking down to protect and guide the likely lost soul. The young runabout, energetic and enthused, yet naive in the ways of the world, like any modern prodigal son, will hopefully be redirected by his better instincts and find the peace and meaning he is so energetically seeking.
Influences, among others, include Max Beckmann, Edvard Munch, Bob Thompson, George McNeil, Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, Francesco Clemente, R.B. Kitaj and Willem de Kooning.
