This painting holds profound significance for me; it is one of my favorites. In this piece, we observe a figure – intentionally indistinct in gender and identity. I chose to leave the main character undefined, allowing anyone to project themselves into this portrayal. The painting was crafted to capture the emotions and the current reality I am experiencing. It speaks of war, destruction, and the immense pain that follows.
In the background, you'll notice craters from rockets – colossal craters scorching everything around them. The once fertile land, yielding crops, now lies dead. Rising from the fresh craters is smoke, a stark reminder of destruction. The trees, bare and frail, depict the aftermath of an exploding rocket. They stand destroyed, much like the land beneath.
From December to January, Ukraine has been subject to intense shelling. This theme is deeply personal as I am directly impacted by these events. The pain inflicted by war is challenging to convey on canvas. The protagonist lacks a specific face, depicted as pale, almost luminous, aiming to convey the emotions of fear and the psychological state of someone living through war.
Despite the numerous artworks addressing war, some pursue distinct objectives. While varied, many war paintings evoke sadness. This painting may join the ranks of historical masterpieces like Francis Bacon's "Crucifixion" or Salvador Dali's "The Face of War."
My aim was to create and preserve this moment, reflecting on recent events and crafting a piece that sheds light on the global issue of war. An artist is not solely a creator of still lifes; they are interpreters of the realities of our world, shedding light on significant events and engaging in self-reflection.
