From a 2018 project: 'Promenade'. This is what I wrote at the time:
Taking a holiday in the UK has started to become more popular with people who actually live there. This has been good news for some seaside towns that had fallen into extreme disrepair following their huge popularity in Victorian times, and had been declining in importance since the invention of the packaged holiday and the British discovery of European nations with cheap wine and beer.
Towns that have benefited from this have made nominal efforts at refurbishing their holiday-making infrastructure, and if you squint, give an idea of their former glories. The 'Promenade' was always an important part of these towns, and the evening promenade on the Promenade was often seen as the pre-dinner entertainment.
During a recent heatwave, I decided to take a camera to the Promenades of several nearby towns, not to observe people interacting, but just to look at the spaces, and the connections between the old town and the contemporary one that are on view. There is a certain idealism in these images, and as a fan of seagulls I have added the odd bird if I felt the image needed it.
