In breathtaking Tyrol, once again, I painted this view from my daughters’ front steps as she is lucky enough to live on a sunny plateau above the Inn valley with a view of the Nordkette, or “North Chain” of the Karwendel alps. The rocky crags tower above the fertile valley, dwarfing the villages below and the light and weather are constantly changing. A fascinating place! On this autumn afternoon, it was chilly painting outdoors but the view inspired me to capture it in watercolour and I painted large scale to try to capture the magnificence of these mountains. Their grey-brown tones contrast with the fresh greens and vibrant autumnal colours in the valley. In the distance, there are some of the villages which are to be seen on the outskirts of the city of Innsbruck.
Rock Face above a Fertile Valley was painted on 600g Hahnemühle mould-made paper using Windsor and Newton watercolour paints. It comes mounted in a white mount to fit a 80cm x 100cm frame.
