As a group of us approached retirement from Wiltshire Police we would catch up with each other’s dreams and aspirations for our future. Lots of us were talking about taking a road trip in a camper van and Scotland and the famous North Coast 500 was a particular favourite.
The North Coast 500 is a 500-mile route around the top of Scotland and takes in some spectacular scenery and some very difficult roads to navigate. There are a variety of vehicles taking part, vintage sports cars to Penny Farthing bicycles, and of course, camper vans.
When I was planning Road Trip I wanted to try and reference the stunning scenery of lochs and mountains, but to include the sense of adventure and freedom that I felt as a new part of my life was starting. Deciding on the vehicle in the picture was easy, if you are going to travel along an iconic stretch of road, then you should be in an iconic vehicle, and the VW split screen camper van is definitely one of those.
I hope the artwork will trigger in you a sense of possibility and adventure, or remind you of a wonderful memory of your own.
A reduction Lino print is made by using the same piece of Lino to print all the colours. Each time a layer is printed then more of the surface of the Lino is removed, reducing the surface area. Each me you put a layer of ink on the Lino and print it, the Lino must come into contact with the paper at the same place, otherwise the picture does not align and will not be usable. Reduction lino printing requires careful planning and precision, as mistakes cannot be easily corrected once a layer of ink has been applied. It is a time-consuming process, but the end result can be a beautiful, vibrant and layered print. I start off intending to make 10 images and usually end up with 7 or 8, but it can be less.
