~Riverland~ Oil on Canvas, 16x20 inch.
Ultimately this impressionist painting is an attempt to capture the beauty and truly temporal nature of a sunset across water. The background is aflame, but the foreground is peaceful, hinting at the peace and stability of the transitioning night.
This lively piece was produced in the South Australian Riverland, on the River Finniss. The painting was begun en plein air in the late afternoon in order to establish the necessary tonal values and mood of the setting. Moving into the evening when the sunset began, I worked rapidly to build up the rich tapestry of a summer sunset. The piece was finished in studio, but the thick impasto application of paint remains in parts.
