River of Time is a very large chalk pastel drawn in six panels :
central to the image are the Three Graces in filmy dresses and. dancing barefoot on the red earth.
To the left a pregnant woman gazes at them (with memory of freedom and carefree times?) and to their right an angel touches one of the women, a reminder of the brevity of life, whilst the bunch of red flowers that she is holding drop their leaves into the swirling river, to be carried along in the tumultuous waters to the young girl, who, at her mother's feet, reaches for the blood coloured petals.
I was thinking of the circle & cycle of life: childhood, adulthood, motherhood and the life thereafter.
It was painted when my daughter was four years old; the young girl is an impression of her.
Inspired by Van Morrison's song of the same title ("...heart & soul, body & mind...meet me on the River of Time")
Drawn in artist’s quality chalk pastel on heavy textured Somerset 300 gsm paper;
each panel is 30 x 44 inches / 76 x 112 cm
The overall image is 96 x 96 inches / 2.3 x 2.3 m
Available UNframed.
The photograph of the piece in situ was taken in Worcester City Art Gallery in 1990 where I had a solo exhibition called Dreams & Desires, and it was the centre piece. Due to my relocating from London to Lincolnshire shortly after this, it was de-framed and packed away. At the time each panel was framed in a slim wooden moulding, close to the edge of the paper, and the six pieces then fitted together on the wall.
The 6 drawings will be packed carefully and sent by Tracked Delivery with a Certificate of Authenticity.
