My portraits are on plywood. I do portraits on commission from photography. I usually prefer backgrounds of solid colors to emphasize the figure unless the client wishes otherwise.
While my painting could look almost photographic at first sight, a closer observation will reveal the density of its texture, its layers, and the myriads of brushstrokes.
I painted the portrait with a very small brush and small, precise strokes in order to enhance all the details, almost as if the piece was made of individually painted pixels. This is further enhanced by the background which, in stark contrast with the main subject is more uniform, and which therefore serves the purpose to highlight the subject and its textures even more.
