This multi-block linocut project has been under way since April 2022. (It has taken so long because it has many constituent parts!) It was inspired by an image by a photographer friend, Tullia Dean, of a deer feeding at Richmond Park, London. I love the stretch and pose of the animal, the strength and tension in the limbs. The context of the deer provided opportunities for having a bit of fun with patterns and textures, which for me are the real joy of working in linocut. The deer is reaching up to eat leaves from some branches, but there was nothing very visually stimulating or remarkable about these branches or leaves in reality, so what could I make of them? I noticed that the leaves seemed to droop in groups, suggesting a circular motif, so I went with that. The resulting stylised leafy branches are done in two colours, with offset orbs of green behind. The grass is represented as patches of texture which come together under the deer to form its shadow, and the lino block is inked in a blend of colour to suggest distance.
This limited edition multi-block linocut is printed in artists' quality oil-based printing inks on 150 gsm acid-free smooth cartridge paper.
