I enjoy experimenting with new media, and also like to find a use for discarded materials that I find floating around my studio or home. This painting was made entirely from old recycled plastic bags and packaging, much of which could not be recycled in the usual way. I was particularly drawn to some of the graphics on the bags and packaging, eg the ones printed with 'recycle and re-use'
I heat-fused pieces of these materials to each-other. By holding the heat source over certain areas for longer than others, parts of the artwork melt to become unrecognisable from their original source. Some of the bags were printed with various suggestions of how to re-use them, but I feel that by incorporating them into an artwork, they will have a new and longer landfill-free life. As the name Renata means 'reborn, I thought it was an apt title for this artwork.
