This painting serves as a hommage to the Dutch master Rembrandt Van Rijn, drawing inspiration from one of his self-portraits. My intention was to pay tribute to Rembrandt's mastery by incorporating elements reminiscent of the iconic self-portrait.
Time and time again, I keep returning to Rembrandt's work as one of the greatest masters of all time. Each time I want to solve a problem in a portrait I return to his work and try to learn from his use of color, use of brush strokes and/or composition.
In this study, I have attempted to capture the character of one of his self-portraits but in another medium altogether. I have used watercolor and not oil paint which makes it rather challenging.
I hope I managed to capture some of the essence of Rembrandt's distinctive style even though I used another technique. And if I didn't, may I be forgiven.
Professional grade watercolors (Daniel Smith) on Bockingford 300g, rough, watercolor paper.
