Artwork description:

This is a two block, two colour linocut print. A dark figure is seated with a patterned shawl around her shoulders as she reaches up to adjust her hair.

My work makes use of the nude figure to address themes of peace, solitude, and the creation of a home within the self. I'm inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, particularly images of female nude bathers, for their elegance and intimacy. Looking at these works I always have the sense that the famale figures portrayed have finally managed to find a moment for themselves in which to rest, to let themselves relax, to hear their own voice.

I wanted to create a similar feeling in my own prints. This relief in solitude is very true to my own experience. Such moments alone are when I can hear what is otherwise buried in the chaos of others' opinions, preferences, emotions and expectations.

As all prints are hand pressed, each will have some minor differences, which I believe adds to the character of the print. I cannot guarantee that you will receive the edition featured in the photo.

Materials used:

lino, Japanese Hosho paper, Cranfield ink
