My interest in redundant, venerable and forgotten churches inspired me to produce Relic. I wanted the image to portray a patina that contained an impression of an ancient artefact.
The etching was produced by working on four copper plates of equal size. This enabled me to build and enrich the image with texture and detail. The four plates are printed simultaneously on to the same Somerset Satin paper as it is rolled through the printing press four times (exact registration of each plate is essential). The methods used - soft ground, spit bite, sugar lift, aquatint and water bite.
Oil-based printing ink and Somerset Satin paper.
