This is a painting of a street in one of my favourite parts of Edinburgh. Reid Terrace is one of several streets known collectively as 'The Colonies' situated along the water Of Leith. This particular street looks West over the river. It is, I think, a particularly beautiful part of the town and I often walk there. The architecture is quite unusual and comprising of nine parallel streets and the buldings have been conserved and well loved in order to keep thier original character. The area has it's own unique village atmosphere. 'The Colonies' were built as an early kind of co-operative housing scheme in the 19th century particularly to accommodate the tradesmen and artisans who contributed so much to the buding of Edinburgh.
