Iceland Series
'Refuge' was taken near the middle of the 300 sq km Reykjanesfólkvangur Reserve in Iceland. Reykjanesfólkvangur lies on major plate boundaries along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, part of the 65,000km mid-ocean ridge and this view depicts the lava field covered in a beautiful abundant green moss.
The area is still active and you can see many cracks and fissures throughout the solidified lava field. You need to be careful where you step as some of the steam and water at the surface can be very hot at well over 100 degrees Celsius in some places.
I was drawn to the juxtaposition of the little bright red hut, a small beacon of civilisation and shelter in the middle of such a vast and desolate location. This 'refuge' could make the difference between life or death if you were caught out here in a storm.
I have created a more close up version of this image for those who like to see a little more of the hut in a less extreme panoramic version which you will also find in my store.
