This drawing was done looking out of the window around lunchtime over a few sessions in Melbourne, Australia. Each day the views and colours of the buildings in the city would change with the shifting sun. Earlier in the day this building would not reflect the sky so clearly, it wasn’t until the late morning that the light created this view. By this time it was way too hot, bright and sunny to draw outside in the midday sun, so drawing through the window was the safer alternative! I love how some modern glass buildings act as mirrors and reflect their surroundings, often slightly changing or distorting them creating a new version of the scene.
This picture was originally started from a purely aesthetic perspective because I liked the image, but as I was drawing, it made me think of the scene as a metaphor for life with a deeper meaning. I started to think how we also can’t help but be influenced by the people and places around us, both positively and negatively, reflecting what is around us. Often, it is how we use these experiences and reinterpret them through our own mind and actions that can help to improve and better ourselves in many ways.
