This painting was started in a lovely woodland in the New Forest called Mark Ash. Mark Ash is an ancient pasture woodland with many fine trees, the oak in this painting is one I have used before in other paintings. I love the twisted shape of its bark as it reaches up its great trunk. The red stag takes centre stage and is truly the master of these woods. The red deer are the largest of the five species of deer present in the New Forest and in early Autumn the woodlands ring to their rutting sounds. The frame is a traditional gold with light coloured slip, which suits the painting.
