Mixed Media on Canvas
• 16" x 20" painting on canvas. Unframed.
Red Rough Ruby is a departure of my bright, high chroma colors. It concentrates on textures and a tactile experience. Shades of black are layered through acrylic, ink, pastel and oil pastel. Certain areas are high gloss, to depict newly flowing magma. Others are rough and matte, peering into the under layers of the painting -- revealing the subtle sheen of precious gems in formation.
When you hold "Red Rough Ruby" you want to touch the surface and tilt her near a source of natural light to sea the changes in color. You will learn to love the rough terrain, and not want to see high gloss surfaces and polished tones.
At least, that was my experience in making Ruby.
Ruby took months. I wasn't happy until my eyes felt like traveling throughout the canvas as if in an expedition. I am not very "outdoorsy" so that says a lot. With Ruby I travel in time and time travels with me.
