Original artwork description:

Red Poppy is a moody and dark depiction of a single flower standing upright alongside a bud that is beginning to burst into life. Poppies are commonly grown in the community planters in my London neighbourhood, their simplicity and stubbornness seemingly making them a strong survivor in an urban environment.
The buds have an embryonic appearance, and they flower quickly from an unappealing and unfriendly cocoon-like stub into the delicate and open flora, the few petals sweeping dramatically from the centre.
The darkness of the glazes of crimson paint that make up the petals emerge seemlessly from the dark background, depicting the way in which the flowers exist almost unnoticed in the busy city noise.
The deep canvas is finished in the blue-black surround, designed to be hung unframed.

Materials used:

oil paint
