When the trees are still bare and the first warmth of the sun's rays touches the forest floor in spring, these dainty flowers fight their way up through the dry leaves and create a carpet of white among the trees. They are a cheerful sight in the otherwise still largely dormant forest with their snowy white heads against delicate dark green foliage. Surprisingly robust, in spite of their apparent fragility, they sadly don't last long because that same sunshine that they seek soon opens up the leaves on the trees and it becomes too dark and shady for the wood anemones. Then their time is over for another year.
I kept this painting simple like the flowers themselves with their delicate white heads contrasted against a tangle of green leaves, brown undergrowth and one or two twigs - nature's chaos against the clean crispness of the watercolour paper.
