Ranga is one of our pet cats, born in our house along with his brother Krsna and sister Sapoor. Their mom was an orange cat too and a stray and when she got her labour pains she came to our door and cried. Quickly we shifted her to a room and placed her in a cardboard where in no time she littered her first babies! They lived in our house for 3 months when another cat Shambhavi brought her four little newborn kittens into our home and in no time ousted Ranga, his siblings and his mom! Shambhavi is another story! But let me return to Ranga.
Ranga did not forget how his family was thrown out by Shambhavi and her family. He was furious about this, though as a 6-month-old he could not do anything! But when he grew up into a fine young Alpha male, he saw to it that Shambhavi and her now grownup kittens were beaten up whenever they were found outside the house! We kept him outside (sadly) as we did not want fights inside and kept the warring cats separate as far as possible. When this was too much to bear, we had to sadly take the decision to neuter him. Thereafter, he became mild and timid and always looked sad. I feel guilty for this. He sits on the wall, under the sun looking very sad. This painterly sketch is of Ranga sitting on our compound wall and looking downcast.
