When I made this piece I was at a workshop studying plein air painting, focusing on creating colors in real time and in sequentially thicker layers until arriving at the final product fairly quickly. This painting style allowed me to really explore loose brushwork, edge variation and control, and to adapt quickly to the colors I saw. Skulls of any kind are a classic subject, and the still life itself is reminiscent to me of how the old masters painted and would set up their projects. I chose the subject for its high contrast and ability to transfer details into simplified shapes while retaining the true form of the image.
